Eventually its educational facilities provided secondary and college-level extension classes as well as evening classes on civil rights and civic duties. Through increased donations more buildings were purchased, and Hull House became a complex, containing a gymnasium, social and cooperative clubs, shops, housing for children, and playgrounds. During her trip abroad, Addams became a critical observer of society. Deeply moved by the suffering of others, and especially the indigent, Addams sought solutions to the problems faced by residents of densely packed cities. Addams returned from this trip energized to create a settlement house similar to what she’d seen in Toynbee Hall, a social settlement in London. In 1887–88 Addams returned to Europe with a Rockford classmate, Ellen Gates Starr.
What began as an exploration of the sights and cultures of Europe became, in fact, an eye-opening experience for Addams. The trip ended in tragedy when John Addams became gravely ill and died suddenly of appendicitis. A grieving Jane Addams, seeking direction in her life, applied to the Women's Medical College of Philadelphia, where she was accepted for the fall of 1881. Many of her classmates went on to become missionaries, but Jane Addams believed that she could find a way of serving mankind without promoting Christianity.

In our less reticent age, skeptical of affectionate female friendships, there is speculation among historians about their relationship. In her autobiography, 20 Years at Hull-House (1910), she argued that society should both respect the values and traditions of immigrants and help the newcomers adjust to American institutions. A new social ethic was needed, she said, to stem social conflict and address the problems of urban life and industrial capitalism. Although tolerant of other ideas and social philosophies, Addams believed in Christian morality and the virtue of learning by doing.

After months of preparing for the difficult entrance exams, 16-year-old Jane learned in July 1877 that she'd been accepted at Smith. Addams insisted that Jane enroll in Rockford Female Seminary, a Presbyterian-based women's school in nearby Rockford, Illinois that her sisters had attended. Though devoted to European culture, Addams was at heart an American democrat who rejected the English class system. Mesmerized by Tolstoy, she visited him in Russia in 1896 and became a lifelong pacifist. Tolstoy, who had hundreds of visitors over the years, seemed unaware of her Chicago fame and chided her fashionable leg o’ mutton sleeves, which he found decadent.
She believed in self-discovery, self-discipline, and self-improvement. Her nephew and first biographer, James Weber Linn, pointed to her keen sense of humor. Not a prude, she believed in sex education, but criticized the hedonism of the 1920s and its fascination with Sigmund Freud.
The establishment of the Chicago campus of the University of Illinois in 1963 forced the Hull House Association to relocate its headquarters. The majority of its original buildings were demolished, but the Hull residence itself was preserved as a monument to Jane Addams. The Museum and its many vibrant programs make connections between the work of Hull-House residents and important contemporary social issues. Addams had a heart attack in 1926 and remained unwell for the rest of her life.

Okay, now that that's out of the way, let's discuss what in the hell—literally! If you're reading this, I'm going to naturally assume that you've made it all the way through The Haunting of Hill House, or you were too scared to watch it and want to learn about the ending so you can talk about it with everyone else. This probably goes without saying, but for us to get into the Haunting of Hill House ending and what it all means, we're going to be venturing into heavy spoiler territory. We'll be trying to work out who the guy in the bowler hat is, what's going on in the Red Room, and (naturally) why Hill House is so damned evil and infested with all sorts of ghostly apparitions. We'll be exploring all that and more as we explain the Haunting of Hill House ending.
Bugs crawling out of mouths, corpses stiffly rising from slabs, spirits that go from pretty young things to withered old crones, unexpectedly gaping mouths and melting faces — all present and accounted for. Spooky figures have a habit of being one place when a moving camera first catches them, then suddenly appear to be much, much closer when the shot turns back to reframe them. Two of the more distinguishable ghosts, a J-horror–chic woman known as “The Bent-Neck Lady” and a lanky floating ghoul with a cane, are genuinely unsettling. The house itself is, and that changes everything. Not in the way you think, at least - after that Haunting of Hill House ending, Mike Flanagan is taking the series in another direction. The Haunting of Bly Manor released in 2020, and takes on The Turn of the Screw, an exceptional 1898 novella by Henry James. His tale follows a governess who gets sent to look after two children and begins to see the ghosts of the previous governess who took care of them, Miss Jessel, and Jessel’s lover Peter Quint.
The ensemble cast features Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, and Victoria Pedretti as the siblings in adulthood, with Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas as parents Olivia and Hugh Crain, and Timothy Hutton appearing as an older version of Hugh. Throughout the 10 episodes, the family converges at Shirley's mortuary to mourn the death of Nell, who returned to the house to kill herself. By the time we reach the final episode, the show has explored each individual character's past and future. Nell was haunted throughout her life by the Bent-Neck Lady, which turned out to be her adult self haunting herself as a child.

Later in their stay, the doctor's wife, the haughty Mrs. Montague, and her companion Arthur Parker, the headmaster of a boys' school, arrive to spend a weekend at Hill House and help investigate it. They, too, are interested in the supernatural, including séances and spirit writing. Unlike the other four characters, they do not experience anything supernatural, although some of Mrs. Montague's alleged spirit writings seem to communicate with Eleanor. Throughout the series, Abigail seemed to be a child ghost who was haunting Luke, but she drinks the poison first and dies on the floor. That's when Hugh arrives, sees what Olivia had done to Abigail, and takes the children away. Olivia is then coaxed into jumping off the balcony to her death, and Hugh returns to the house to find her dead. In the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain and their children - Steven "Steve", Shirley "Shirl", Theodora "Theo", Luke, and Eleanor "Nell" - move into Hill House to renovate the mansion in order to sell it and build their own house, designed by Olivia.

Another implied possibility is that Eleanor possesses a subconscious telekinetic ability that is itself the cause of many of the disturbances experienced by her and the others, which might indicate there is no ghost in the house at all.
